What Is Osteoarthritis Disease?
Often referred to as degenerative joint disease or “wear and tear” arthritis, osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage between joints breaks down over time. The condition is characterized by stiffness and pain in the joints, especially after resting. Although there is no clear cause, the development of the disease is often attributed to genetics, weight gain, and injury or overuse of the joints.
This degenerative disease has no known cure. Staying active and controlling weight gains can help slow progression. But ultimately, medications and joint replacement may be required to treat the condition.

How Can Celltex Stem Cell Therapy Help?
Given their ability to form chondrocytes and their immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) hold promise in the treatment of osteoarthritis. Several phase I and II clinical studies have shown that MSCs can reduce pain and are associated with some functional improvements in cartilage regeneration scores. (It is not clear if this is mediated via anti-inflammatory actions or a regenerative mechanism.)
Clinical trials are underway to demonstrate efficacy and to understand the mechanism of action, which will be useful in defining how to maximize the therapeutic benefit and appropriate dosing regimen. Transplantation of MSCs in humans for a variety of conditions has been generally well tolerated.
